| 2006 Newbery Medal Winner
The Newbery Medal honors the author making the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, an annual award made by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). The ALSC is a division of the American Library Association.
This year's winner is "Criss Cross" by Lynne Rae Perkins (Greenwillow Books). Perkins' story follows the lives of four 14-year-olds in a small town, each at their own crossroads. The ensemble explores new thoughts and feelings in their quest to find the meaning of life and love.
The ALSC also named four titles as Honor Books for 2006:
- "Whittington" by Alan Armstrong.
- "Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler's Shadow" by Susan Campbell.
- "Princess Academy" by Shannon Hale.
- "Show Way" by Jacqueline Woodson.
